vintagemojo asked: what are your views on aesthetics in today's society?

Ooh, that’s a big question. I think a great part about the aesthetics in today’s society is how creative types are constantly drawing from history to create new things, blending different eras and styles into something beautiful.

However, the whole “fast fashion”, fast everything, blah blah has really effected design negatively I think. People want things fast, they get sick of them fast, everything gets thrown out and recycled before we really get a chance to appreciate it. It’s style over substance a lot of the time, which I really can’t stand. I think style and substance can go hand in hand, I think things should be made with quality and purpose in mind while still being beautiful.

There are also a lot of modern things that I find extremely unattractive. TVs, large appliances and cars have gotten hideous over the years. They’ve turned into an idea of “modern” that doesn’t fit with how I view modern should be, but maybe I’m in the minority because my favourite idea of futuristic and modern is the mid-century, Jetsons vision haha.

I’m also pretty disappointed with a lot of product packaging (although there are many artists out there who take it to a high art). I mean, beauty products in the drugstore are clunky and cheap looking a lot of the time. If you look back at Yardley, Max Factor, Avon, Revlon ads, etc. from the 50s and 60s you’ll see that drugstore beauty didn’t have to look unglamorous!

So yeah, I’m on the fence. I love a lot of vintage aesthetics, mainly from the first half of the 20th century, but I appreciate a lot of the innovations and a lot of work coming out from designers in this day and age.
